In the background you can hear the muffled noise of drilling, but what do you do if you have the builders in? Sotheby’s is fortunate in that it has several entrances, so while it might not be as prestigious as Bond Street, George Street to the east provides alternative entrances while the building work is going on.
It does make the layout a little confusing, going backwards through the normal progression of rooms, but that makes it an adventure. Last month was photography month for the auction houses with photography auctions here and at Phillips. Here, in more classical Mayfair rooms than Phillips’ contemporary spaces, were many classical modern photographs, reflecting not only the skills of the photographers but also the fashions, life and society of the last 80 years, sometimes with a touch of humour…., but generally reflecting a more glamourous side of life than those at Phillips.
