Golden art from Columbia

The British Museum’s autumn exhibition is the stunning “Beyond Eldorado – Power and Gold in Ancient Columbia which shows 200 artefacts from the pre-Spanish period.  Gold was not considered financially valuable by the Columbian civilisations, but was pillaged by the Spanish in the 16th century, so it is marvelous that these items managed to survive.  The exhibition shows some of the best items from the Museo del Oro in Bogota.  One of the problems of the exhibition is that it is difficult to precisely date many of the items, so while there is a mixture of styles from naive to highly detailed, we don’t know the chronology or how styles developed through the preceding centuries.

Worth seeing!
