Was in coincidence that, with Phillips having its Photography auction last week, other galleries also had exhibitions of photography, that at Alon Zakaim focusing on three photographers – Terry O’Neil, Chris Smith and Douglas Kirlklans – who captured the world of film, fashion, music and celebrity in the 1960′s and 1970′s, all watched over by Marilyn Monroe in Yvaral’s painting ‘Marilyn Numerisee’ from 1993.
Those recorded from this era which seems so close to us who lived then, but so far away in other ways include Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Mohammed Ali, Audrey Hepburn, David Bowie, Dean Martin, Brigette Bardot, Paul Newman, Lee Martin, David Bowie, The Who. the Beatles and Rachael Welch.
As always for me, the black and white prints have greater artistry and are far more evocative of the era than the coloured ones and this exhibition reinforces how much we miss the loss of the Getty Images Gallery which use to be near Oxford Street and has now moved 0n-line – a sign of the changing times.
