Cities often look their best at night when imaginative lighting illuminates buildings and streets while darkness hides the grit and dirt that can detract from them during the day. Think of the London Eye, the Eiffel tower and the bridges of Paris or other iconic buildings illuminated at night. Five years after the Olympic games in Beijing, artist Jennifer Wen Ma and lighting designer Shen Jianwei were invited to create a work of public art for the Beijing National Aquatics Centre, also known as the “Water Cube”. This artistic duo created an imaginative and changing computerised installation ‘nature and man in rhapsody of light’ to display “the analysis of emotions expressed by citizens through social networks, reflecting the overall mind and aura of the nation through visual means, representing a balance of individuality, creativity and social responsibility of the Chinese people”.
