So, what do you know about modern Swiss art? Probably not very much. Can you even name a modern Swiss artist? Is it because the country is surrounded by other countries and cultures – even split into three different areas with three different languages. It is always a shock to drive over a Swiss mountain speaking one language to discover a community speaking another…. but that is the complexity and the fun of Switzerland.
Hawser and Wirth have brought together works from several artists from the 1930′s/Dada era into their Gallery in Mayfair, with mirror reflections and views out into the street outside. An oversized pot from Peter Fischli/David Weiss sits in front of fluttering banners by Vivian Suter, while Urs Fisher has skeletons sitting on top of washing machines (presumable washing their clothes?), reflected in a mirror-cube opposite Manon’s Salmon- Coloured Boudoir. Urs is probably the hero of the show, also with his work ‘Art of Falling Apart’ while Fabrian Marti’s handprints take over the middle wall to create a personal wallpaper on which other artworks are hung.
