The new gallery, designed by Nick Gowing architects, occupies the former underground car park of the historic French Railways House. The conversion uses a simple palette of materials and cleverly leaves some of the eccentricity of the original brickwork and structure exposed, giving character to the gallery and allowing natural light to penetrate down to the lower area.  Environmental services and LED lighting have been simply added to the existing structure, respecting its industrial nature and a staircase bookshelf becomes part of the art exhibition.

The current exhibition provides a riot of colour to brighten the grey winter days, with ”Sunset” wall sculptures, combining screen-printing and painting on aluminium and formica, and ”Shade Paintings”, where day turns to night, by the British artist Bruce McLean who was a student along with Gilbert and George and Barry Flanagan at St Martin’s, but whose work became more colourful and humorous than many of his contemporaries.
