Oh to be young again! Young Gods have taken over Charlie Smith London’s gallery in the East End of London. Work by these recent graduates from London art schools have been curated by Zavier Ellis with a palette of restrained colours and an emphasis on texture, movement, words and a variety of materials as with Tess William’s composition in crumpled grey, black and cream. J Price has filled one wall of the gallery with three of his erratically-printed works on curtain linings from the series “Sheets & Pages” which are poetic in their texts, while Lorraine Fossi’s work “Sliding” is reminiscent of an old-fashioned slide rule but larger in scale and made of old industrial materials and round the corner, Laura O’Neil has smashed tiles into the wall at great force creating gusts of black dust blowing out from inside the plaster. In contrast, Christoper Gray has created an old-fashioned boxing ring in which, if you listen carefully, you might hear the sound of boxing gloves of two opponents knocking each other into submission.
While a limited selection, Ellis has picked work from a number of graduates to be watched in the future to see how they develop.
