The PACE Gallery at Burlington Gardens has a fascinating exhibition “We have Betrayed the Revolution” by the young Chinese artist Li Songsong who takes images that are well know from history, from newspaper reporting or from advertising and, by the way that he deconstructs them and reassembles them using squares and rectangles of heavily-layered paint, gives them a timeless quality. Stand close to the paintings and you see one thing; stand further away and you see another; stand close in time to the original images and they means one thing; stand further away in time and they take on a new meaning as history, politics and cultures evolve.
“Everyone knows the story. The important thing is the way that you tell it. The way depends on your
attitude, and attitude changes with time. As society changes, attitude changes accordingly.” Li Songsong,
