Continuing the theme of photography of crumbling derelict buildings or structures (see the previous entry on Detroit), Matt Emmett who calls himself a “Forgotten Heritage Photographer” has been shortlisted for this year’s Eisa Maestro photographic competition for his photographs of neglected, spooky, empty decaying buildings and industrial sites which can be seen on his website.
His work concentrates on hidden, locked and out-of the way-places, often in isolated or underground locations where our engineering predecessors took pride in creating works of great beauty even in sewers where their attention to detail and design would never be seen. As these structures decay, they take on a different atmospheric feeling, with layers of dirt and grease, broken glass and debris, but their original design still shines through.
