The first START art fair supported by Prudential and held at the Saatchi Gallery in London was, by all accounts, a great success with strong sales and a good attendance – the preview day saw 2,200 VIP guests (so many that the show ran out of VIP catalogues) with total visitors over the 5 days of the fair exceeding 11,000. The spacious rooms of the Gallery were home to 46 exhibitors, with project (“eye”)spaces supported by Prudential, from all around the world presenting both artists who has been seen before in London and also new artists who had not been exhibited previously. Gallery owners and artists brought great enthusiasm to the show. A wide variety of work and of media was on display with many having a political edge, appropriate to the country of origin. Sadly technology seemed to defeat the show and a few video/technical works had blank black screens, which was a great shame.
A great inaugural show and it augers well for this becoming a regular in London.
