Last, but not least of the London auction houses with their focus on modern and contemporary art alongside Frieze, albeit surrounded by road works, as is much of London, Phillips too was bursting with colourful and bold modern and contemporary art, including sculpture by KAWS and Antony Gormley.
The highlight was an exhibition of Andy Warhol’s portraits of Lenin, the final project he worked on before his death in 1967, on loan from the archives of the Galerie Kluser in Munich with whom Warhol worked in close collaboration.
There were, as usual, some strange works such as an open carboard box (Gavin Turk ‘Brillo’), neat stone blocks (Carl Andre ‘Cube on Block’) and a model of a Macdonald’s drive-through (Jake & Dinos Chapman ‘Rhizome’).
