The Tour de France starts today in the rain of Yorkshire. Over the past few weeks, Bristol-based street artist Stewy has been busy brightening up walls along the route with five stencils of well-known Yorkshire-born cultural figures, including David Hockney, the Bronte sisters and Jarvis Cocker on cycles in places associated with them.
Stewy deliberately chose people who were not known as cyclists. This was his own project, inspired by the race – he was not commissioned by the organisers and obtained permission from the building owners. “My partner is from Moor Monkton near York so even if I don’t have an immediate Yorkshire link my family are from there.” He explained.
