A sinister figure, his face wrapped in bandages, arises from the suitcase and turns to look out of the window into the Calea Victoriei. Deeper in the space, legs are kicking, hands are struggling to lift blocks of wood and another suitcase is slowly opening.
Galateea Contemporary Art in Bucharest is the first gallery in Romania dedicated to contemporary ceramic art. These finely-detailed ceramic works ask the question ‘What do you know about yourself?’ as artist Leon Tibacov explores personality in his exhibition ‘Selfie’ curated by Vasile Cercel.
Tibacov argues that the visual artist builds from his own and other people’s experiences in a creative experience that results in the formation of new identities in his ceramics and new interactions between art and individual and different viewers.
There is a long tradition of pottery and ceramics in Romania and Leon Tibacov reinvents this tradition in the 21xt century.
