A great idea reported in the Evening Standard is for £3 million plan to create a four mile long sculpture trail in East London, linking the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and The 02 with a walk along which there would be up to 30 modern and contemporary sculptures. The project is supported by film director Danny Boyle, Turner Prize winner Mark Wallinger and runner Christine Ohuruogu.
The project is linked to the investment being made by the London Legacy Development Corporation to open up the waterways to the public and will invite artists and collections to offer works in storage or studios for inclusion in the trail. Funding us being sought through link the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and The 02 with a walkway of up to 30 modern and contemporary sculptures.
Funding is being sought. If this project succeeds, it could act as a catalyst to something larger. The East End still has the Whitechapel Foundry and has many artists’ studios; there is therefore an untapped source here to create new industries and raise the whole profile of public sculpture, as Loveland in Colorado has done with its sculpture parks, new foundries and international sculpture festival. .
