How does Grayson Perry see himself these days. Once a rebel of the art world, currently with an exhibition of his work at Victoria Miro, here he is as one of the classical contemporary artists at Frieze Masters, the sister to Frieze which shows art that is more classical and established, from Egyptian to modern Scottish (hooray), though the distinction becomes blurred and there are overlaps between the two.
To reflect its more classical approach, the design of the fair is more refined and ordered than in Frieze with pavilions constructed for each gallery within the overall marquee.
Star of the show was, of course Botticelli’s amazing ‘Portrait of Michael Marullus Tarchaniota’ from around 1500, looking astonishing fresh and in some ways quite modern for a painting of its age, a reflection of Botticelli’s ongoing influence on artists.
