The exhibition Smarter London at the Building Centre, London explores how data, technology and computer analytics are changing the way the building, transport and environmental professions design, build and manage a complex and growing 21st century city such as London. It illustrates a variety of “smart projects” in London from a wide range of organisations to demonstrate how data and computerised modelling is being used in the development of single buildings, city-wide infrastructure projects and predicting the future needs and development of the city. It demonstrates how gaming can contribute to community consultation projects and how art is responding to the digital world with a specially-commissioned “street art” illustration London Smartners (meaning London smart partners) drawn on an iPad by artist Julie Leonard.
This is an exhibition to stay and watch as it only with viewing the full run of the various videos that the visitor appreciates the amount of information provided, for example on Building Information Management (BIM) – the process of having a centralised database of project information for all members of the building team and the pioneering work of Arup with Project OVE, examining how the human body can help us understand how to build better (the BIM model on display looks spookily like human e-rays) and on using digital visualisation to investigate London’s transportation, environmental issues, history, pedestrian and vehicle flows.
