In 2017, after 20 years, the Wilkinson Gallery in Vyner Street near Bethnal Green closed as the owners went their separate ways. Fortunately, the gallery space was taken over by Steve Shave’s Modern Art, as a counterpoint to his more industrial space opposite St Luke’s Church in Old Street.
The simple modern two story building, set in a sea of industrial buildings, with its simple architectural staircase has proved its flexibility while it has been host to Team Gallery from New York as part of this year’s Condo initiative, a good place to start or to finish a visit to the galleries further south in Bethnal Green. The two floors means that it can combine two exhibitions, thus Modern Art has been showing paintings by the English artist Katy Moran upstairs and hosting TEAM Gallery from New York downstairs which has been showing work by American photographer Paul Mpagi Sepuya.
The staircase is still a feature and it is lovely to see it playing with the artwork on the staircase walls.
