Here is a question for your Christmas cracker.  What is an art gallery?  Is it an iconic building like the National Gallery in London, the Getty in Los Angeles or the Guggenheim in Bilbao?  Unit London believes it is the art,, not the architecture, as it moves from space to space, taking a great group of artists with it and establishing its galleries in unusual locations.    

Established in 2013 by Joe Kennedy and Jonny Burt, perhaps its origins as a pop-up space in Chiswick with a heavy emphasis on social media means that it is less precious about a permanent space than other galleries, given it has built up a large following of over 80,000 followers across social media and its open nights are fully subscribed. 

Having moved from Chiswick to Soho, it has now moved to its next home in Covent Garden, surrounded by trendy fashion and food shops, with a brass band playing nearby, where it has taken over a vacant retail space in Mercer Street, and. with a flourish of white paint and good lighting along with a temporary staircase, has created a two-level gallery space that opened last week with Jake Wood Evans’ shadowy images in Transitions with a range of works that create haunting, misty visions of well-known classical paintings, that can just be discerned and recognised through the ghostly image.

Given the nature of the work, which is creating something new for the 21^st century from images of previous centuries, the theatrical backcloth of Covent Garden, an area which is also in transition, provides a great location for his exhibition.
