The building looks promising, in the refurbished former Fix Brewery located not far from the Acropolis Museum, but it remains half empty. With an ambitious focus of showing that Greece is not just about ancient monuments but has a vibrant contemporary art scene, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST) has a completed building, an exhibition of Chinese contemporary art in the temporary exhibition galleries at the lower level in October, followed by an exhibition of recent acquisitions running at the moment, but the upper levels proposed for the permanent collection, accessed by escalators and lifts remain closed off to visitors. According to the latest reports, approvals and funding will (at last) be in place for the new galleries to open in the first half of 2018. In the interim, the museum has been responsible for curating the Greek pavilion at the Venice Biennale with one of the best national presentations, the Laboratory of Dilemmas.
