If you can, you need to visit Messums’ two locations in Wiltshire and in London, for between the two there is currently a fascinating exhibition of ceramic art – European in Wilshire and Korean in London.
The Korean exhibition was more restrained than that in Wiltshire, with a much greater link to traditional Korean art and culture and less artistic acrobatics. While Lee Hun Chung created new ceramics that at times challenged the technology of the material, Ree Soo-Jong’s work was much more rooted in traditional form and decoration, reinforcing the traditional culture of Korea brought into the 21st century, one of the successes of contemporary Korean art.
