PACE London’s gallery space is surrounded by hoardings as the redevelopment of the Royal Academy continues apace, antipated to open in 2018. At one time part of the Memphis design group founded in 1981 by Ettore Sottsass, Du Pasquier’s early work included the design of textiles and surface patterns for furniture, after which she concentrated on painting, exploring the relationships between different shapes and colours in both 2 and 3 dimensions, though she has also maintained an involvement in textile design, including for American Apparel in 2014 and, blankets and bedding, in conjunction with George Sowden, for Zig Zag Zurich in 2015. The Memphis influence can be seen in the work, which is playful, with different shapes and colours juxtaposed against each other in new ways.
The layout of the gallery itself plays with geometry, with projecting coloured plinths and a central square room within a room, accessed through a narrow doorway, and the windows providing geometric patterns of white light which move across the exhibition, giving it a dynamic and changing conection with Du Pasquier’s work.
