In this computerised digital age, do designers and architects still use traditional drawings, models and prototypes to develop their ideas, or do they sit at their computers and rely on CAD and other programs to do it all for them?
Seventeen designers and architects have come together in this year’s ‘Prototypes & Experiments’ at the Aram Gallery in Drury Lane with a wide range of projects including infill housing in Croydon by Threefold Architects, a modern extension to a historic house in Kent by Charles Holland Architects, textiles from discarded imperfect fabrics by Ruohong Wu, rust-textured ceramics by Ariane Prin, tables by Dan Schofield, glass by Jochen Holz, ceramic building cladding by ACME, folded structures by Natchar Sawatdichai, recycled plastics turned into jewellery and personal objects by Marie Holm, cutlery using extruded recycled plastic by James Shaw and Dean Brown’s LED table lamps showing how they prototype and experiment as part of their creative process. As can be seen, reuse and recycling is a theme with many of the designers.
The old ways are not dead!
