Disney cartoon characters including Mickey Mouse and Goofy, love stories, crime, terror, mystery, the Mafia and cowboys have all come together with many classics of their time in a variety of languages such as The Godfather, For a Few Dollars More, Batman & Robin, Notorious, The Birds, My Fair Lady, Some Like it Hot, Vertigo, The Dam Busters, and a link to the current exhibition at the Design Museum with 2001: A Space Odyssey.
It’s that time of year when the art world in London is quiet as clients holiday in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean; some galleries even close for the whole month; others run summer shows. The auction houses do something different. Arguably, Phillips have taken the lead with Gary Card’s magical hysterical experience while at Sotheby’s there are online auctions, one on contemporary art, the other on film posters and other materials, with displays fulling the gallery spaces while the builders continue to drill away at the front of the building. The film posters are worth seeing both for a glimpse into film history and for the graphic designs of the time that defined many of the films such as The Godfather, Anatomy of a Murder, Vertigo and Notorious.
