Goodbye to the White Cube architectural style for art galleries. A colourful, mad, magical mystery wonderland has appeared in the heart of Mayfair. Bright colours, with mysterious and magical characters weaving themselves through the ground floor with different angular spaces as you wander through, with weird perspectives created by the walls and on the floors and with glimpses out to the more restrained environment of Mayfair itself. Phillips auction house in Berkley Square is breaking all the rules for the summer with multi-talented designer Gary Card’s installation and curation of ‘Hysterical’, a selling exhibition including colourful, mischievous and irreverent works by artists such as Cindy Sherman, KAWS, Yayoi Kusama, Ugo Rondinone, Paul McCarthy, Kenny Scharf, Takashi Murakami and Gary Card himself, including fascination videos by SMACK, where the art and the installation merge so much that sometimes, unless you have the list of artworks with you, it is difficult to see where the art ends and Gary Card’s design starts, the two are so intertwined.
An exhibition worth seeing for a fascinating selection by some of the top international artists, within the colourful theatrical environment which proves that design can add value and context to art. Will any of the collectors who buy from the exhibition dare to be so adventurous in their own homes?
