Consultation started this week on the imaginative proposals by designer Thomas Heatherwick for a new £150 million garden bridge spanning across the River Thames between the South Bank and Temple station adjacent to Somerset House. This would be great for King’s College London which has campuses on both sides of the river. This proposal is spearheaded by Joanna Lumley and Thomas Heatherwick, with landscape architect Dan Pearson. This would be a bridge for people to linger in gardens as they crossed the Thames, with changing landscapes between the two river banks, a place for lovers to meet and a place for tourists to enjoy the unique river views by day and night.
The reviews in newspapers such as the Evening Standard were extremely positive. With half the money raised and the support of mayor Boris Johnson, Joanna Lumley and Thomas Heatherwick, this project stands every chance of success. Planned date for completion is the end of 2017.
