University of the Arts London selected at Pulse

13th May
A selection of work from the University.  Rokos’ decanters which turn from vertical to horizontal are empty are interesting but far too expensive at over £400 for a decanter.  Finn’s graphics were bold and fun and Rabin’s candle holders were interesting, but her glasses with blackboard paint for names are too gimmicky. Arora’s textiles were also fresh and colourful.  Top prize however has to go to Costas Bissas with his simple idea of a beautiful stone heat-sink computer stand.  Fingers crossed that this becomes a commercial success.

Overall, much of the main exhibition was the same as previous years, with a slight twist for the Christmas market and also for ethical/sustainable products.  The graphics were good, whether pictures, paper or fabrics, and there were some really lovely fabrics (many from Scotland of course).  The most interesting was flux furniture from the Netherlands.  How robust it will be in everyday use is perhaps questionable however.

    Hello Ian

Thank you so much for including our 13° 60° 104° wine decanter in your post.

    Regarding the price:
Our decanter is hand made in the UK by a unique individual with the skills needed to create the decanter. It is mouth blown whilst it turns on the lathe and no moulds are used. We have a high number of seconds and many of the successful pieces need to be taken to another glass craftsman to be polished. Our decanters are made in batches of 20, no more than four times a year. Because there is no mould, each piece is unique.

Please watch the incredible process in our video:

I believe that you are comparing the price to decanters that are mass produced outside the UK, that are blown into a mould, by machine.

    Kind regards
