It is initially a little strange to find the first artist on show in an exhibition of Surrealism in Latin American art to be English, but if you know the history of the artist Leonora Carrington who moved to Mexico in 1942, you will understand – all of which makes the current tensions in the UK linked to the two extremes of Brexit, one being isolationist, the other being truly international, all the more difficult to understand.
The NSU Art Museum has an excellent collection of Latin American art which, over the years, it has shown in different ways. The current theme of Surrealism provides a focus and enables an international perspective with, as you would expect, a good representation from Cuba including Wildredo Lam, Gilbero Ruiz, Tonel, Demi, Jose Bedia and Pablo Cano’s huge marionettes. Indeed, at this exhibition, Cuba punches well above its size, reflecting the innovative artistic talent of the island.
