The Power of Art, Cartoons and Animation – George McBean, the Insurgent Artist – Exhibition at Oxford Brookes University

The Oxford Brookes University Human Rights Festival celebrated its 13th year with an exhibition on the contribution of the Scotsman George McBean to children’s rights and development through art, illustration and animation.  As Head of the UNICEF section dealing with Animation for Children’s Rights, McBean was instrumental in creating one of UNICEF’s most successful partnerships with more than 100 animation studios including major companies such as Disney, Pixar, Warner Brothers, Dreamworks and Hanna Barbara, thereby calling on an army of characters including Mickey Mouse, Superman and Wonder Woman, with actors such as Peter Ustinov providing narration for the animated films. After his retirement in 2012, he has continued to develop new ideas on the theme of illustration and animation for development.

A stellar example of how art, illustration and animation can be used to light up the imagination of children in developing countries.
